How To Build A Phone Power Bank From Damaged Laptop Battery.
Power banks are external batteries which are built to a certain capacity, meant for storing power for later use. Probably when you’ll far from home or when there is an outage.
When laptop battery is damaged, it can still barely retain charges, when your laptop battery gets bad or stops charging, it doesn’t primarily mean the whole battery is dead. It maybe as a result of a broken circuit inside the battery or one or two of the cells inside is dead not all. Since we usually have 6 to 12 cells inside, you can pick out the damaged ones and reuse the rest for a power bank.

STEP 1: GET STARTED
Look for the weak spot somewhere in the battery along the seams, and carefully insert a screwdriver blade and twist up and down until the pack pops open. If you have difficulties finding a weak spot along the seams, please use a dremel saw or cutting disk to cut through an angle – not along the seams, or you risk damaging cells. Be careful during doing this process.
Safety: always have a fireproof container nearby, along with a bucket of sand. This is the best antidote tp lithium fire burn.
STEP 2: PULL THE CELLS APART
Pull the cell assembly out of the pack.
They are usually held in by double-sided tape or connected using metal tabs. Remove the tape so as to pull them out of the assembly pack.
Caution: please be careful when removing the cell from the assembly. Make sure they are not bent so as to avoid short circuiting or explosion.
STEP 3: DISCONNECT THE CHARGING CIRCUIT
Then carefully disconnect the charging circuit by cutting the wires that are connected to the charging circuit and between the cells using a Wire Cutter. Also, take into consideration the type of connection used on the cells. In some cases, they are wired in parallel, some in series and others, combination of both. After identifying the connection, then separate the individual cells.
STEP 4: REMOVE THE TABS
Twist the solder tabs off by using nose pliers. So as to bring in the new cells you bought online from ebay or other chopping sites, If you want to build a pack with the harvested cells, you might want to keep the tabs instead of twisting them off, as it makes soldering a lot easier and safer. After the tabs are pulled off, gently dremel the weld points until the surface is flat.
STEP 5: IDENTIFY THE GOOD CELLS
- Measure cell voltage. if it’s less than 2.5v, throw it away.
- Charge the cell. if it gets hot during charging, throw it away.
- Measure cell voltage off the charger. verify it’s between 4.1 and 4.2v.
- Wait for 30 minutes
- Measure cell voltage. if it’s fallen less than 4v, throw it away. Otherwise record the voltage.
- Store cell for 3+ days in cool, dry place.
- Measure cell voltage. if cell voltage has fallen more than 0.1v from the recorded voltage, throw it away.
Any cell that hasn’t been thrown away by doing the above test is considered to be good one.
I kept all the good cells inside the 18650 battery storage box.
STEP 6: MAKE THE POWER BANK
According to Deba168, he bought a Power Bank USB 18650 Battery Charger Case.
You can buy Power Bank casing and charging board from eBay.
Insert the battery inside the slot provided in the case.
The positive terminal of the battery should be towards the charging board.Sometimes polarity is marked inside the case.
Safety: Be sure you are inserting the battery with right polarity( if the charging board do not have reverse polarity protection).I did the mistake and fried my charging board instantly.

Then put it for charging by using the USB cable provided in the packet.
Attach the key chain with the case.
Finally the power bank is ready for use.
